Age: 19 School: Port Richmond High School Location: NYC

Squidnice contacted me a couple weeks ago asking to meet and conduct an interview. I happily accepted and we set a date. When I first met Squidnice, in person, it was clear that he was an original, open, and optimistic artist. An artist who knew what he wanted in this world and wasn’t afraid of obstacles. Despite the freezing weather, loud trucks, and random bikers, we found a satisfactory seating arrangement in a tiny park and began the interview.

In his own words:

“I was born in Staten Island but not the pretty side lol but I lived in bay ridge brooklyn from 2nd to 8th grade. But I got into trouble so my mom made me move to my fathers house in Maryland and he was crazy and kicked me out after a year with a gun in my face then I moved back with my mom in Brooklyn , my mom got a tumor in her hand so we moved in my uncles house back in Staten Island and I started making songs on soundcloud my junior year.”

Age: 17 School: Professional Performing Arts School Location: NYC

The first time I met Taylor (Taylor Nirvana Jones), I knew she was put on this earth to bring joy to others. It’s been six years and nothing has changed. During 2013, Love Jones Girlz – a girl band that Taylor has been a part of ever since she was eight – was signed and began touring, it’s great to have her back for this final school year. Everyday we go to acting class and everyday Taylor delivers an authentic and impossible-not-to-love side of herself – be it through an animated comedic scene or a somber heart wrenching monologue. I’ve seen Taylor working at her craft since we were twelve and her desire to be the best she can has never hindered. I look at her as she performs and realize that her never-ending optimism is a quality that every artist strives to have. We just finished presenting our final scenes in Acting class and her dedication and true embodiment of her character Janice (from Italian American Reconciliation) made her final showing hilarious and completely unforgettable. On December 1st, Barrington Walters and I got the chance to see Laguardia High School’s Drama K One Acts.

Filled to the brim with talent, twenty-or-so senior Drama majors performed in numerous one acts ranging from “The Actors Nightmare” (by Christopher Durang) to “Fabulation or the Re-Education of Undine” (by Lynn Nottage). A familiar EX LOCUM face, Clare Maceda, played Anette in a scene from “God of Carnage”, a fast-paced, rollercoaster of a play that begins with niceties, formalities, and handshakes and ends with Annette crying over her purse and viciously throwing tulips around the room while her husband, Alan (played by John Colapinto) drags her out and another married couple, Veronica and Michael (played by Rebecca Mitzner and Harrison Geller) watch in shock.

As intense as that scene may sound, the others were able to match it, keeping us on the edge of our seats with laughter, anticipation, and sometimes tears.
Before that night, I’d never heard of the play “Fabulation or the Re-Education of Undine”, but I’m not ashamed to say that, after seeing it in the LaGuardia one acts, I ran home and began to look for a copy online to read. The play was overflowing with worldly themes and texts that challenged my moral and philosophical beliefs. The main character was so poignant and somehow relatable – despite her seemingly unrelatable struggles. Undine Barnes-Calles (played by Janelle Clements) goes through the tunnel of misery when she is forced into a divorce, accidentally caught with heroine that isn’t hers, and discovers that she is accidentally pregnant. Janelle portrayed this character so authentically – not only touching the audience’s hearts but also making it clear that she, as an actress, allowed Undine to touch hers.

Clare, a fantastic actress and an even more marvelous human being, has a few words to say about the entire experience and what it was like to be a part of such a knockout show:

These were just two of the five spectacular one acts that were performed on the night of December 1st.

This is not a show that I will be able to forget, even after all the lights turned off and it was time to leave, I sat in the rain waiting for the bus and letting the acts rewind in my head, trying to relive the emotions I felt when the actors and actress were standing on the stage and giving it their all, affecting every single audience member around them.

“My name is Mark Robertson also known as Markthecraft. I’m a 17 year old medical science student at Midwood High School, currently residing in Brooklyn, New York. In my free time I enjoy exploring and capturing moments with my camera. In late 2012, I began to use my first camera and ever since then I fell in love. Just the idea of being able to capture a moment and fine tune it caught my interest right away. In the long run, I hope to show another side of New York that no one has seen before with a variety of photographs.”

Erik is a committed director with a unique vision and a powerful voice. Ever since I met him back in BADA, he’d talk about his experiences directing shows. His Macbeth was always being brought up. He told me stories about this production with such nostalgia and passion that I almost felt like it was happening in front of my eyes! He also shared some funny and unconventional ways they came up with to solve problems, and how he learned to put shows together.

One day last summer, I sat with him and Amanda and watched with admiration as he gave acting notes to Amanda while she was performing a monologue. Every note he gave was powerful and effective. Peter is a funny and charming performer filled with life. Interviewing him was hard because he made me laugh so many times. He is an exuberant actor and his vitality is contagious! No wonder he has played a lead in every show I’ve ever seen him in.
