When I was younger, my grandmother would buy me disposable cameras and I would take pictures of everything in sight. I got my first DSLR camera in 2014, when I signed up for a photography at my high school. I originally took the class because my girlfriend at the time was in it, but I ended up falling in love with capturing images more than anything. When I first started treating photography like an art, most of the projects that I worked on were heavily reliant on altering images and combing them in interesting ways. More recently, I’ve been trying to focus on more tradition photography projects.

Photography gives me the opportunity to share my perspective with other people. There are a million ways to take a picture of something and the way each person does it is very telling about who they are as an artist and who they are as a person. I also find the idea of capturing a single moment to be very interesting. When I press the shutter button on my camera, I’m able to capture an instant in time that will never happen again.

Recently, I’ve been going on a lot of photography missions by myself. I’ve discovered that driving around and taking pictures is very cathartic for me and I’ve come to look forward to my time alone. One time while I was looking for places and things to photograph, I got horribly lost. I considered turning around and going back the way I came, but I wanted to get more images, so I kept driving down the road I was on. As I came over the crest of a hill, I saw an old set of railroad tracks that ran along a lake. I decided to get out of my car and investigate. On the other side of the tracks, there was a very steep hill that led down to a small beach covered in large rocks. I spent the next twenty minutes climbing along the rocks and taking pictures. I sat down to review some the shots I had taken just a breeze came off the water. I looked up from my camera and realized how content and genuinely happy I was. It’s these moments that make me love photography. I’m able to escape the stresses of everyday life and explore the world around me, even if I’m only twenty minutes from where I live.

Swag Team reached out to me last week over a cordial email. Within a couple days, we were able to set up an interview in Columbus Circle, and although it rained buckets, we had a wonderful time! A few words about who they are from member, Everton:

“Swag Team is young group of artists focused on creating music and a style that embodies what it is to be a young person in America. We love making music that everyone can enjoy and show our creative skills while doing it. We as a group put together sounds that show our struggle, happiness and more. We just want to spread the love and appreciation with our music to our fans and the rest of the world. With the help of Linda we are able to book studio sessions, stay organized, and have great visual locations, as you can see in our Latest video “Last Identity”.”

It serves to mark cultural and societal milestones
You’re 13? You’re a man in Jewish culture
15? Quincenara time, Amiga.
18?
18?
Going once, going twice?
18?
I just turned 18, and I don’t feel any different.
I don’t look any different.
But the symptoms of 18 aren’t obvious. They’re much more nefarious.
You’re part of the rat race, kid.
College loans and being tried as an adult are a few of the lovely prizes we have in our bonus round of life, cause when you pass that age, kid, the gloves come off, and the brass knuckles come on.
But here’s the thing.
In the grand game of life, age isn’t even a pebble in the proverbial pacific pond, buddy.
I’ve met people my age wise beyond their years, and people older then me who could learn a few things by going back to kindergarten.
Be yourself, not who you should be at 13, 14, 15, and so on.
Study remedial physics, rally, protest, get an internship, travel the world.
Life was made for loving and living, not counting the tallies on a chalkboard.
So don’t hold yourself to the amount of candles on a cake.
At the end of the day, it’s all wax burning.

Shoreditch: Why do we avoid something the moment it becomes well-known?

It is an interesting phenomenon to watch the youth community and the art community converge. There are Internet phenomenons that become so fad-like that it is an affront to the young culture to disagree with them. There are also artistic movements that share a certain vision, although those lines are drawn less clearly nowadays. Still, the moment something enters too clearly into the mainstream, the moment your aunt who has no artistic vision starts mentioning images and locations, both groups become completely averse to it.

Shoreditch is an area in East London that has transformed over the last 15 years. It went from being like the surrounding area of Islington, run-down and made up of mainly immigrant families, to a vegan, cigarette smoking haven of people in their early 20s. It has now been denounced as no longer being as cool since many people know about it. Ignoring the obvious gentrification and wealth issues, this seems to be a popular consensus. But while walking through East London, it seems like Shoreditch is still fun. The clubs are cool, the coffee shops have clever names and intriguing interior designs, and the restaurants are well themed.

Why does something lose a level of enjoyableness simply because others are taking part in it?
While the pizza craze, where every person seems to revel in the fact that they could eat half of a pizza in one sitting, has yet to wane, enjoying certain artists’ music seems to hinge on their notoriety. Why would one stop supporting an artist simply because they have gathered other supporters? Wouldn’t you want to continue bolstering their art? This is where I see a main dilemma. How can we expect people to stick by our own art when we, young artists, seem to be repelled by anything that has a platform? Why are we only attracted to art in dark corners?

Someone’s art is not of a lesser value since it connects to a wider audience. It is important to question how someone’s message reached that many without being watered down, but it seems more dangerous and toxic to throw something out simply because the follower count has gotten too high. There is a lot of senseless art that receives little recognition because of its poor quality, not because of mainstream agendas. Be wary of why we stray from the well-trodden path simply because we see footprints.

When I first met Squidnice, in person, it was clear that he was an original, open, and optimistic artist. An artist who knew what he wanted in this world and wasn’t afraid of obstacles. Despite the freezing weather, loud trucks, and random bikers, we found a satisfactory seating arrangement in a tiny park and began the interview.

In his own words:

“I was born in Staten Island but not the pretty side lol but I lived in bay ridge brooklyn from 2nd to 8th grade. But I got into trouble so my mom made me move to my fathers house in Maryland and he was crazy and kicked me out after a year with a gun in my face then I moved back with my mom in Brooklyn , my mom got a tumor in her hand so we moved in my uncles house back in Staten Island and I started making songs on soundcloud my junior year.”

Listen the the full version of “Trap By My Lonely” on Soundcloud:

Squidnice’s latest track “MAC”:

BE SURE TO WATCH THE VIDEO AND TELL US WHAT YOU THINK!

P.S. Fun fact : Squidnice had a baby photo that went viral, here it is:

The first time I met Taylor (Taylor Nirvana Jones), I knew she was put on this earth to bring joy to others. It’s been six years and nothing has changed. During 2013, Love Jones Girlz – a girl band that Taylor has been a part of ever since she was eight – was signed and began touring, it’s great to have her back for this final school year. Everyday we go to acting class and everyday Taylor delivers an authentic and impossible-not-to-love side of herself – be it through an animated comedic scene or a somber heart wrenching monologue. I’ve seen Taylor working at her craft since we were twelve and her desire to be the best she can has never hindered. I look at her as she performs and realize that her never-ending optimism is a quality that every artist strives to have. We just finished presenting our final scenes in Acting class and her dedication and true embodiment of her character Janice (from Italian American Reconciliation) made her final showing hilarious and completely unforgettable. Watch this video for a guaranteed mood-booster and a glimpse at the exciting talent that Taylor displays!

Two little gals traveled all the way from the Big Apple to uncharted territory- Brooklyn. Why you ask? EX LOCUM founder, Ana Krutchinsky, and I were venturing to an art gallery hosted by NYC-based student run production company, Rascal Arts. Rascal Arts is overflowing with talent, from actors to designers to producers to visual artists; they are forging a path for young artists to fearlessly break the rules and create on their own terms.

The gallery was held at The Shoestring Press and featured a medley of original art/poetry by company members and submissions from outside artists. The work was utterly powerful and thought provoking as it touched on subjects such as police brutality, terrorism, and well, human nature in general. The work oozed with a common thread, one that we often try to shield ourselves from in order to keep from getting hurt-love. The theme of love was undeniable. It heavily influenced the essence of the entire event. Everyone was truly thrilled to be there. They were there for the love of art and poetry, the love of the jazz music playing in the background, the love for their friends who had orchestrated such a wonderful event, and of course the love of free food!

I was lucky enough to snag Rascal Arts member, Paige Simunovich, for a hot second to ask her a few questions about the mission of the gallery and Rascal Art’s itself. She highlighted an idea that many people often forget as we try to figure out how we want to spend the rest of our lives at the lovely age of 18. She said, “ There are buckets of talented artists who go unrecognized because it’s not their main thing, but you can be a visual artist who also does theater or fashion or science. You aren’t limited to just one path.” She also emphasized the idea that the beauty of art is that it’s tangible. Anyone can learn, it just takes exorbitant amounts of hard work, and falling on your face a few times, until you reach that magical moment when everything clicks.

Rascal Arts is undoubtedly on the rise so watch out for their future events and don’t be afraid to create, even if it isn’t your “main thing.”
