Age is a figment of our imagination, just like
It serves to mark cultural and societal milestones
You’re 13? You’re a man in Jewish culture
15? Quincenara time, Amiga.
18?
18?
Going once, going twice?
18?
I just turned 18, and I don’t feel any different.
I don’t look any different.
But the symptoms of 18 aren’t obvious. They’re much more nefarious.
You’re part of the rat race, kid.
College loans and being tried as an adult are a few of the lovely prizes we have in our bonus round of life, cause when you pass that age, kid, the gloves come off, and the brass knuckles come on.
But here’s the thing.
In the grand game of life, age isn’t even a pebble in the proverbial pacific pond, buddy.
I’ve met people my age wise beyond their years, and people older then me who could learn a few things by going back to kindergarten.
Be yourself, not who you should be at 13, 14, 15, and so on.
Study remedial physics, rally, protest, get an internship, travel the world.
Life was made for loving and living, not counting the tallies on a chalkboard.
So don’t hold yourself to the amount of candles on a cake.
At the end of the day, it’s all wax burning.

Why you ask? EX LOCUM founder, Ana Krutchinsky, and I were venturing to an art gallery hosted by NYC-based student run production company, Rascal Arts. Rascal Arts is overflowing with talent, from actors to designers to producers to visual artists; they are forging a path for young artists to fearlessly break the rules and create on their own terms.

The gallery was held at The Shoestring Press and featured a medley of original art/poetry by company members and submissions from outside artists. The work was utterly powerful and thought provoking as it touched on subjects such as police brutality, terrorism, and well, human nature in general. The work oozed with a common thread, one that we often try to shield ourselves from in order to keep from getting hurt-love. The theme of love was undeniable. It heavily influenced the essence of the entire event. Everyone was truly thrilled to be there. They were there for the love of art and poetry, the love of the jazz music playing in the background, the love for their friends who had orchestrated such a wonderful event, and of course the love of free food!

I was lucky enough to snag Rascal Arts member, Paige Simunovich, for a hot second to ask her a few questions about the mission of the gallery and Rascal Art’s itself. She highlighted an idea that many people often forget as we try to figure out how we want to spend the rest of our lives at the lovely age of 18. She said, “ There are buckets of talented artists who go unrecognized because it’s not their main thing, but you can be a visual artist who also does theater or fashion or science. You aren’t limited to just one path.” She also emphasized the idea that the beauty of art is that it’s tangible. Anyone can learn, it just takes exorbitant amounts of hard work, and falling on your face a few times, until you reach that magical moment when everything clicks.

Rascal Arts is undoubtedly on the rise so watch out for their future events and don’t be afraid to create, even if it isn’t your “main thing.”

What happened at this address a few weeks ago wholeheartedly encompassed the mission of EX LOCUM. This is where music collective “Rhetorical Intentions,” comprised of some familiar faces like Imperial Chambers, XG, Jet Commander, Mara Uriah, and other additions such as Chvse and Squid, hosted an electrifying show. The group energetically performed their original music as the crowd wildly cheered and bounced along. The atmosphere honestly
cannot be described by a word other than “Lit.”

The walls were covered in innovative artwork by our very own resident poet, Emile Ravenet, and every detail of the performance was caught on camera by Bernard Scudder. These various art forms dramatically collided to create an
exhilarating experience.

Each audience member joined together in support of these young artists who left everything they had on that stage. It was utterly raw and real. Majority of the crowd had not known one another prior to that night, but I am 100 percent sure not a single person felt “out of place.” 287 Spring Street is just an address, but these artists instilled it with life and vivacity. Be sure to give them a listen, and look out for their future shows because it truly was a night to remember.

The post The Artist’s Dilemma appeared first on EX LOCUM.

The Artist’s dilemma,
A neat little rhyme,
“I must do it perfectly, just right, every time!”
But see, that’s the problem!
With that thought in mind
Each tiny mistake is a bomb, every time
Cause nobody’s perfect,
It’s sad but it’s true.
Don’t hold yourself to that dumb standard set by you!
Because there’s a statement, that might be quite gritty:
Sometimes when you write, the story will sound real shitty
Sometimes when you act, you’ll forget all your stuff
Sometimes when you dance, you might fall, and that’s tough.
But the best feeling in life, past the falls and the hell,
Is that time when you do it like Mozart himself,
You’ll get it, and rock it, and feel like a master
At least, until the next time’s a disaster.
But mistakes are made to learn from, you face them and grin,
Cause the amount of mistakes will decrease, become slim.
So when you see thunder booming in the sky,
Buck up, little buddy, just spread your wings and fly.

I’m at my favorite coffee shop – Frisson Espresso. It’s one of those places that does latte art, but isn’t pretentious about it. Unlike majority of bitter Starbucks barista’s they make you smile from ear to ear in the morn’. My friends and I often equate it to “Central Perk.” As I’m sitting there, I overhear the barista talking about how he is on the hunt for a new resident artist. The work displayed at Frisson is always quite darling, but suddenly it all clicks. Ana Krutchinsky, Exlocum founder and one of my dearest friends, would be more than perfect for the position. She had just finished a series of paintings portraying the Seven Deadly Sins. I texted her at the speed of light. Long story short: you can now catch two of her glorious paintings hanging front and center at Frisson! She’s already received multiple offers from potential buyers so hurry fast! Drop everything! Literally run! This is not a drill!

Moral of the story is that connections are important. Things happen when you least expect them so be kind to all, even the folks who make your morning coffee.

On December 1st, Barrington Walters and I got the chance to see Laguardia High School’s Drama K One Acts.

Filled to the brim with talent, twenty-or-so senior Drama majors performed in numerous one acts ranging from “The Actors Nightmare” (by Christopher Durang) to “Fabulation or the Re-Education of Undine” (by Lynn Nottage). A familiar EX LOCUM face, Clare Maceda, played Anette in a scene from “God of Carnage”, a fast-paced, rollercoaster of a play that begins with niceties, formalities, and handshakes and ends with Annette crying over her purse and viciously throwing tulips around the room while her husband, Alan (played by John Colapinto) drags her out and another married couple, Veronica and Michael (played by Rebecca Mitzner and Harrison Geller) watch in shock.

As intense as that scene may sound, the others were able to match it, keeping us on the edge of our seats with laughter, anticipation, and sometimes tears.
Before that night, I’d never heard of the play “Fabulation or the Re-Education of Undine”, but I’m not ashamed to say that, after seeing it in the LaGuardia one acts, I ran home and began to look for a copy online to read. The play was overflowing with worldly themes and texts that challenged my moral and philosophical beliefs. The main character was so poignant and somehow relatable – despite her seemingly unrelatable struggles. Undine Barnes-Calles (played by Janelle Clements) goes through the tunnel of misery when she is forced into a divorce, accidentally caught with heroine that isn’t hers, and discovers that she is accidentally pregnant. Janelle portrayed this character so authentically – not only touching the audience’s hearts but also making it clear that she, as an actress, allowed Undine to touch hers.

Clare, a fantastic actress and an even more marvelous human being, has a few words to say about the entire experience and what it was like to be a part of such a knockout show:

“The process was incredibly rigorous. My cast was all close friends and we were strained a couple of times due to the nature and complexity of God of Carnage. However, we persevered and with the help of Cervellino, lots of rehearsal, and a pep talk before the show about not holding back for a second, I feel that we did the best run we could of hoped for the day of the show.”

Kimberly Campbell, the actress who played Undine’s mother in “Fabulation…”,
says:

“Cerv and Allie (Sheedy) were extremely helpful and great at providing guidance and thoughtful opinions while allowing us to maintain and make our own creative choices.”

These were just two of the five spectacular one acts that were performed on the night of December 1st.

This is not a show that I will be able to forget, even after all the lights turned off and it was time to leave, I sat in the rain waiting for the bus and letting the acts rewind in my head, trying to relive the emotions I felt when the actors and actress were standing on the stage and giving it their all, affecting every single audience member around them.
